Motivated by the the members of the public who are currently putting themselves at risk for the greater good, and by figures of recent history who have acted in similar ways, Buster Shuffle vocalist, Jet Baker sought out to bring together members of the ska and punk community for a positive and collaborative musical project that could fittingly honour them, as he explains:
“Whilst on lockdown at home, I kept thinking there must be something we can do. Both my sisters work for the NHS on the frontline, so I needed to do something to help. I decided to reach out to all the great bands and musicians that we’ve toured with over the years to see if they could lend a hand. When they all started confirming, I knew we had something special on our hands and so we all got to work, recording our parts in isolation.
The songs are about two brave people who, in their time, faced extreme danger and huge challenges to make changes in the world for others. Iqbal Masih and Ruby Bridges.
Iqbal Masih was sold into slavery by his parents at 4 years old to the owner of a carpet factory. After many years of forced labour he eventually escaped. He then decided to help over 3000 Pakistani children that were in ‘bonded labour’ to escape to freedom and made speeches about child slavery throughout the world.
Ruby Bridges was the first African-American student to integrate into an elementary school in the South of America. Ruby and her mother were escorted to school by four federal marshals every day that year. Undeterred, she didn’t miss a single day of school, despite all the abuse and the physical threats that she received.”
For the uninitiated, Buster Shuffle is a high-energy ska’n’roll band hailing from the East End of London. Brimming with frenetic-piano led riffs and a charm that’s hard to ignore, the band’s recipe of vintage ska and punk sounds has seen them tour the globe, sharing stages and touring with the likes of Madness, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less Than Jake, and more . While recent albums, I’ll Take What I Want (2017), Naked (2014) and Do Nothing (2012) have collectively pulled in praise from the likes of The Guardian, Uncut, The Metro and Steve Lamacq.
Following a sold-out run of tour dates with American Hellcat Records import The Interrupters, Buster Shuffle were pleased to unveil a 9-date headlining UK tour this April/May, which due to Covid-19 had to be cancelled. New tour dates will be announced in due course in accordance with public health announcements.
