The song is taken from their new double-A sided single ’13/7′ and ‘Outcast Kids’ released 18th October through Rose Coloured Records. Commenting on the video, vocalist Lauren Holmes explains:
“In the video for 13/7, the character is trying their best to help a loved one get back on their feet whilst they aren’t taking care of themselves. Over time, the toll of their downhill spiral becomes something that isn’t easy to handle, and really begins to effect the character. Though she tries her best, and feels it’s her responsibility to fix things, eventually the burden becomes too much to handle, and she has to accept that no matter how much effort she puts in, it isn’t going to change anything. By the end, she makes the decision to put herself first and relieve herself from an impossible task of helping someone who doesn’t want to be helped.”
This latest release see’s Laulia capitalising on a swell of support following their inclusion on Blood Records’ ‘Girls Against’ compilation, alongside Dream Wife, Hinds, and Courtney Barnett, a special appearance at Camden Rocks Festival, as well as some strong backing from regional BBC radio stations.
Produced by Tom Hill at Bookhouse Studios in East London (Employed To Serve, Night Fight, The Yacht Club) the single is the latest taste of new material from the band since their debut singles ‘Burning Out / Machines’ released March 2019 through Flying Vinyl.
Commenting on the song, vocalist/guitarist Lauren Holmes said: “We often feel it’s our job to take care of the people we love, we may even feel we owe it to them for everything they have done for us. But at times, we have to accept that their self-destructive, co-dependant behaviours can begin to take a toll on our lives. This is often quite difficult to see; it’s so easy to be lead down the road with someone, and it’s so difficult to ‘snap out of it’ so to speak. Sometimes it comes down to the choice of loving yourself or loving someone else, and ultimately, we must accept that we can’t help those who don’t want to be helped.”
The end-result of an evening of inspired creative synergy, ‘13/7’ was written just days before the band were due to lay down an entirely different track together at their East London studio. A dramatic and moving offering that draws heavy influence from groups like Wolf Alice, Foals and Slowdive, ‘13/7’ highlights a level of musical maturity and healthy confidence that will set up Laulia to be one of the most exciting prospects of 2019.
In support of the release of ‘13/7’ and ‘Outcast Kids’ Laulia have been on tour throughout October and will finish up 2019 with two more shows in Reading and Brighton with further dates to be announced in due course.
