Worcestershire producer INWARDS (aka Kristian Shelley) is pleased to reveal a stunning, dream-like video for his new single ‘Dart’ which is out now on Small Pond Recordings. The track is the latest to be taken from his critically acclaimed new EP Feelings Of Unreality, also out now via Small Pond.

Preceding the four-track release, both upfront cuts, ‘Dart’ and ‘Feelings Of Unreality’, gained high profile support including Dummy Mag, CLASH, Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Gideon Coe (BBC 6Music), The Selector, and more.
Directed by Ali Gill and starring Paul Huntley-Thomas, the video echoes the hauntingly dystopian nature of the song, as Gill explains his vision for the visuals: “The track had this hypnotic, trance-like quality—listening to it almost felt like you were inside a daydream. Yet there was also quite a fast, kinetic feel to the track that immediately stood out. So I wanted to do a video that was both psychological and also had a quick and jerky aesthetic that matched the track’s rhythm.”
Possibly the only song you’ll hear this year about an elephant who gets hit by a dart whilst on the run, ‘Dart’ epitomises Inwards’ gloriously cracked, psychedelic energy. Warped bass, drum breaks and dark synths meet staccato-chopped vocal samples (featuring the warm, ethereal voice of Rose Dutton from Rokorokubi), while broken music-box melodies dash in and out of earshot.
“The song is like fighting an unpleasant experience. Like the elephant is trying to run away but it can feel the dart kicking in”, Shelley elaborates. “It gives me that solid melancholic rave feeling that I love. My friend Sam Organ described it as ‘Sad Rave’, which I thought was spot-on!”
An experimental music programmer and multi-instrumentalist from Worcestershire, Inwards (aka Kristian Shelley) draws influence from the far reaches of dance music. The peaceful rural environment of his log cabin home/studio plays host to a hive of activity, where electronic and acoustic instruments come together in a prolific stream of playful yet emotionally potent instrumental songs. For Shelley, music has always fulfilled an urgent need to communicate where words fall short, and his instinctively composed tracks capture swift, potent snapshots of an inner world.
This new material builds on an exciting past year for the producer, who released his debut album, Diesel, in April 2018 to high praise from Electronic Soundmagazine, The 405, TRAX mag and more. The record also hit big at radio with aBBC 6 Music Recommends Track of the Week, heavy support from Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), a BBC Introducing live session, a guest mix for Tom Ravenscroft, and further widespread airplay across the BBC and beyond. Rounding things off in style, two tracks were highlighted in Steve Lamacq’s Best of 2018 selection.
Feelings Of Unreality is out now on Small Pond Recordings.
