Fuzzed-up lofi pop quintet OhBoy! are extremely pleased to announce their new single ‘Hey Princess’ which will be released on 18th November via Canvasback Music (Atlantic) in the US and Alcopop! Records in the rest of the world.
If you were of the culinary inclination and wanted to make an OhBoy! trifle, the band reckon you’d need: a carton of Teenage Fanclub, 2 x large spoonfuls of The Pixies, and a squeeze of The Lemonheads. Whisk with a fuzz pedal until thick, then sandwich between two slices of Pavement and Yo La Tengo. Pop it in the fridge overnight, and serve with just a sprinkle of Britpop. Sounds delicious to us, and there’s not a soggy bottom in sight – Mary Berry would be pleased as punch.
Steadily growing momentum from their base in Northampton – a town that was once known the world over for being the home of British shoe manufacturing (even the local football team are still called The Cobblers) – OhBoy! find themselves adrift amidst another of the increasingly gentrified swathes of the UK that are being slowly “regenerated” from their industrial roots upwards.
The old shoe factories are now apartment buildings, housing the commuters that make the hour or so train journey into London everyday. Describing his home town, front man Jay Brook refers to it as “the ex-industrial heartland of the UK. If you stick a pin in the middle of England on a map, that’s Northampton; both physically and metaphorically right in the middle. Not awful, but not spectacular.”
“Living slap bang in the middle does allow us to play shows up and down the country fairly easily, which is nice. We played quite a few festivals over the summer too, including The Great Escape, Truck Fest, Camden Rocks and Glastonbury.”
The band were hand-picked for Glastonbury by a BBC panel to play their ‘Introducing’ stage and have racked up plenty of support at UK radio from the likes of Steve Lamacq at BBC6 Music, Huw Stephens at BBCR1 – for whom they recorded a Maida Vale live session – and John Kennedy at Radio X.
“As a band, we’re pretty independent” they explain “we engineer everything ourselves. Jay’s gotten pretty good at sticking a mac on something and pressing the record button. We also write, direct, and co-edit our videos.”
