Stoke-on-Trent’s Average Joe is pleased to announce his return with details of his new ‘Song Catching’ project, which sees him travelling the country in search of the people and stories of which songs are made.
As part of the project, Average Joe will be releasing a regular documentary series on YouTube exploring the background behind each song in the project, with Episode 1 sponsored by Jägermeister out now.
The first song to be ‘caught’ as part of the project is new single‘Work In Process’ and is set for release on 10th September 2021.
Commenting on ‘Work In Process’ and the idea behind the project, Joe says: “The fundamental premise on which Song Catching is based is that songs are akin to butterflies, or fish, or viruses. You have to go out into the world in order to find them or catch them—be patient and attentive and with a spot of luck you might just catch something special, but to some extent they find you as much as you find them, they lie waiting to be written into existence.”
With this in mind, in episode one Average Joe guides us through this premise, his hometown of Stoke, and introduces us to some talented locals, whilst showing us a glimpse into the songwriting process as he hunts for inspiration.
Ruminating on the very ordinariness of everyday life—the mundanity, heartache, hard graft, and little victories—and twisting it into something transformative, enigmatic crooner Average Joe has already made his mark early.
Following a string of well-received standalone singles, Joe released his debut EP Take It Or Leave It in 2020, picking up a flurry of early press support from the likes of NME, DIY, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, GIGWISE, and Notion with prior radio spins from Radio X.
Mixing the qualities of revered storytellers Father John Misty and Tom Waits with the caustic spirit of Sleaford Mods and Mike Skinner, he’s already fully justified his growing status as a key figure in the Midlands scene.
A support slot with Kate Tempest and a flurry of previous appearances on the festival circuit at Kendal Calling, Live At Leeds, and Neighbourhood Weekender have already given Joe’s eclectic batch of vintage soul, hip-hop and classic R&B-inspired material the perfect live platform, with further live dates over the coming months.
