WACO Reveal John Carpenter Inspired Video For New Single ‘Elevation’

10th September 2021

London, UK based cosmic punk favourites WACO are pleased to announce their return with the video for their brand new single titled ‘Elevation’, set for release on 8th September 2021 via long-term label home Venn Records (Gallows).

One of the most hardworking bands on the scene, the quartet soon dive back into a packed autumn/winter 2021 touring schedule which sees them out on the road for headline shows, festival appearances, and support slots with the likes of The WildheartsWifeswap USA, and Snake Eyes—tickets are on sale now (see below for listings).

The new single and video come with the following special transmission from WACO front man Jak Hutchcraft:

“To whom it may concern

I am an amateur musician and filmmaker and I’m sending this e-mail from a secret location in the British Isles via an encrypted VPN. On August 15th 2021 I was filming a short documentary about inner city architecture in a city in England. Something unexpected happened during the shoot. I found some black sunglasses on a park bench that changed the course of my life drastically.

Through them I saw something I can only describe as horrifying. I saw that our human species is being controlled by fear, coercion and trickery. The culprits seem to be some kind of subhuman fascist overlords. Yes, really. The bare bones of their master plan became visible to me and I saw their oppressive spell for what it is.

Their omnipresent and clandestine nature meant that they tracked me down pretty quickly after I found the glasses. After being pursued for some time by agents, I found refuge in an unexpected place. I can’t tell you my coordinates but please know that I’m safe for now. Please await further transmissions.

Grace, peace and revolution,
Jak Hutchcraft”

The single is the first tease of new material from an as-yet unannounced project, and serves as a call to action to WACO fans both old and new to join the band’s fight over the coming months.

Commenting on the song itself, WACO say: “This tune is about trying to live a healthy life while trapped in a sick society. Trying to be the best you in a turbulent sea of conflicting and disorientating information. Governments and corporations make money and maintain their power by stoking our fears and insecurities. Division is big business. In this setting, self-love, compassion and unity are forms of self-defence and rebellion.”

The single comes accompanied with another high concept music video from the band, who have previously impressed with a string of thoughtful and creative home efforts.

This time around they’ve paired up with director Paul Blue at True Media for an homage to John Carpenter’s 1988 sci-fi action film They Live, which starred Rowdy Roddy Piper as a drifter who discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to uncover subliminal messages in the mass media from alien overlords.

WACO’s most recent album Hope Rituals was released in 2021 to critical acclaim and was the first to feature bassist James Robinson, who joined the band after the tragic loss of their dear friend Chris Cowley in 2018. While much of their previous 2019 album Human Magic served as a method of healing for the band, the latest offering looked optimistically to the future and a hope of better days.

Displaying their knack for raw storytelling and good vibes through their early EP’s Deathless (2017), Uprise (2016), Sundown (2015) and their debut album Human Magic (2019), the band have earned praise from the likes of LOUDERRock SoundKerrang!MagazineUPSETMagazineLouder Than War, and Punktastic, alongside radio support from BBC Radio One’s Zane LoweHuw StephensPhil Taggart and Dan P Carter, and Planet Rock Radio.

‘Elevation’ is released 8th September 2021 via Venn Records
