South London Emo-Pop Band BEARS IN TREES Sign To Counter Intuitive Records

10th June 2021

South London quartet BEARS IN TREES are delighted to announce they have signed to Boston, Massachusetts label Counter Intuitive Records (Oso Oso, Mom Jeans, Sleeping Patterns, Prince Daddy & The Hyena) for the release of their new AA-side single ‘Flower Through Concrete’ on 14th May 2021.

The songs were mixed by mega-producer Alexander Archer who has previously worked with Phoebe Bridgers, Carly Rae Jepson and Dodie.

Commenting on the track, vocalist and bass player Iain Gillespie says: “On this song I try to encapsulate what spring means to me—not simply the season changing, but a moment for a fresh start away from the glumness the sunless months prior can hold. It’s also about finding peace with the fact that happiness isn’t a permanent state, and healing is a journey, with ups and downs a given.”

The band recently announced their first UK headline tour for July 2021, originally scheduled for December 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets are on sale now and selling fast, with all venues upgraded during lockdown (see below for details).

Bears in Trees have been described as emo-pop and indie punk, but don’t really know what to call themselves, so they just call themselves a “dirtbag boyband”. You can call them whatever you want, as long as you’re nice. The band formed in a South London basement in late 2014—four teenagers who grew up on a diet of online fandom, mid ‘00s emo-pop, and the golden age of One Direction, Bears in Trees wrote music from their basement hoping that someone would listen.

And listen they did.

Nearing seven years later, over 100,000 people would come to find solace in the band’s unique blend of online irreverence, absurdist humour, and dedication to fostering a community that keeps each other safe—all without mentioning the underground hit songs they’ve written about working in gay bars, becoming friends with worms, and processing the deaths of close friends.

Citing the likes of Fall Out Boy, The Front Bottoms, Modern Baseball, The Wombats, Walk the Moon, The 1975, Dodie and Cavetown as their main influences, the band have released three EPs to date—I See Blue (2019), I Want To Feel Chaotic (2020), and Keep Me Safe (2020)—netting themselves 124k monthly listeners and 44k followers on Spotify.

The band now find themselves in the unusual position of having painstakingly built their own highly engaged digital fan base whilst flying completely under the music industry radar. They are selling out shows across the country, have surpassed 150k TikTok followers with over 3.4 million likes, amassed 55k followers on Instagram, built a burgeoning Discord channel, and have a thriving Patreon model that subsidises releases.

‘Flower Through Concrete’ is released 14th May 2021 via Counter Intuitive Records
