Bristol progressive math-rock band LAST HYENA are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Where’s Laika?’ which is out now on all good digital service providers.
Thematically, the trio keep their cards close to their chest—with no lyrics or vocals, their music is by its very nature pure expression of emotion, but that doesn’t indicate that it’s devoid of meaning.
“All of our songs have their own meanings and stories behind them,” explain the band, “but we feel they are all very contextual to the listener, and we like to see what it means to them rather than offering the story behind them. There is a recurring space-like theme throughout the album, however, this wasn’t planned—we actually didn’t have a name for the album set in stone until after we finished recording it.”
The track is the latest to be taken from their forthcoming debut album How Soon Is Mars? which is set for release on 30th April 2020, and will be the first LP release from Cardiff independent label Stereo Brain Records.
The album is available to preorder now: https://stereobrainrecords.co.uk/
Pending COVID-19 disruption, the band are confirmed for ArcTanGent Festival 2021 and PWER Festival 2021, and will be announcing further live dates in due course.
Forthcoming debut album How Soon Is Mars? was brought to life at Trapdoor Studios in Liverpool with Tom Peters (Wot Gorilla?, Alpha Male Tea Party, The Hyena Kill, Cleft, Body Hound) at the production helm, a period which the band described as “a non-stop creative process from start to finish. We spent a solid week in the recording studio trying to make the album sound as big as possible.”
There’s been a Last Hyena-sized residence carved into the South West alternative scene for some years now. After kicking things off at Falmouth University and relocating to Bristol some years later, the trio have so far self-released two EPs (2017s Self-Titled and 2018’s I Remember The Future) to much acclaim.
Peddling proggy math tunes with a big ol’ smile, their jagged, rhythmic music is jazz-fuelled and cerebral, but never falls into the trap of taking itself too seriously.
Pre-COVID, the band launched themselves head-first into the UK live circuit with a co-headline tour alongside All The Best Tapes, a support tour with Hypophora and performances alongside scene stalwarts Delta Sleep, Tangled Hair, Thank You Scientist, Slow Crush, Poly-Math and many more, firmly cementing them as ones to watch from the latest crop of UK underground progressive bands.
Previous single ‘Doctorpus’ was released earlier this year to praise from a host of key underground rock blogs including Everything Is Noise, Alt Corner, and Bring The Noise.
