Bristol’s LAST HYENA Sign To Stereobrain Records

18th February 2021

Bristol progressive heavy math-rock band LAST HYENA are delighted to announce that they have signed to Stereo Brain Records and will release their debut album How Soon Is Mars on 30th April 2020.

Commenting on the signing,  label manager Luke Priestley said: “Releasing your first LP is a very exciting moment for any label but honestly I cannot be more excited about getting this record out into the world! I first saw Last Hyena with (now label mates) FORT in Cardiff and I was blown away. Mid-pandemic this incredible record dropped into my inbox and honestly I just couldn’t say no. I’m a huge fan of bands like Axes and Alpha Male Tea Party, and this record ticked all those boxes for me. We’re so happy to have Last Hyena as part of our little SBR family and cannot wait to go mad watching them at ATG.”

To celebrate the news, the band have revealed the video for lead single ‘Doctorpus’ which is out now on all good DSPs. Pending COVID-19 disruption, the band are confirmed for ArcTanGent Festival 2021 and will be announcing further live dates in due course.

Commenting on the single, the band said: “The concept for ‘Doctorpus’ is set in a not-too-distant future where medical professionals and doctors have all disappeared and the only things remaining in the healthcare profession are octopuses. They can multitask very well and are very cheap to pay, although basically ineffective.”

“For the music video we wanted an over-the-top Scooby Doo meets b-movie horror approach. We teamed up with GLKMedia (Kieron Gallop of Phoxjaw) and made this a reality in just one long evening.”

There’s been a Last Hyena-sized residence carved into the South West alternative scene for some years now. After kicking things off at Falmouth University and relocating to Bristol some years later, the trio have so far self-released two EPs (2017s Self-Titled and 2018’s I Remember The Future) to much acclaim.

The band launched themselves head-first into the UK live circuit with a co-headline tour alongside All The Best Tapes, a support tour with Hypophora and performances alongside scene stalwarts Delta Sleep, Tangled Hair, Thank You Scientist, Slow Crush, Poly-Math and many more, firmly cementing them as ones to watch from the latest crop of UK underground progressive bands.

Peddling progressive math rock tunes with a big ol’ smile, their jagged, rhythmic music is jazz-fuelled and cerebral, but never falls into the trap of taking itself too seriously.

Launched in 2019, Stereo Brain Records are a Cardiff based record label focused on rock, alt and indie. “We love variety, and we adore the weird and the wacky,” says label manager Luke Priestley. “The label started with the release of a compilation for Pwer Festival 2019 to raise money for mental health organisation Heads Above The Waves. We wanted to continue this into our future releases so now 10% of all our sales go to HATW to help support young people who are struggling with self harm and mental health problems in South Wales. Two years on and we’ve already delved into the realms of pop punk, goth, post hardcore, indie and post rock in our time as a label, with more to come in 2021!”

Further details and music TBA over the coming months.
