Cardiff Indiecana Newcomers TJ ROBERTS announce second album

27th November 2020

Cardiff indie/Americana quartet TJ Roberts are delighted to announce the news of their second album, Love, Loss & Other Useless Things, set for release on 8th December 2020.

To celebrate the news the band are streaming lead single ‘Passed Out On A Hollywood Star’ in full today, with the track out now via all good DSPs.

Commenting on the single, the band say: “POHS was written after watching the documentary ‘Going Clear’, a portrait of a new recruit to a new-age cult. It’s a song that calls on the glamour of old Hollywood and its facade, with the same fascination as was held by the artists of Laurel Canyon in the 70s.”

For those yet to meet his acquaintance, TJ Roberts is an artist soaked in transatlantic tradition. Consummate entertainers live, he and the band have a broad spread of classic influences, variously evoking the earworm melodies of Big Star, the mid-west charm of Twin Peaks and Wilco, along with the beautiful drawl of the late, great David Berman.

Alongside bandmates Heather, Gavin, and Jasper, since 2018 frontman Tom (aka Thomas John Roberts) has set his sights on pushing their rock-infused ‘indie-cana’ to its limits, employing the talents of respected producer Tom Rees (Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, Do Nothing, Panic Shack) at the controls to bring their latest album to fruition.

The new record will be the follow up to their 2019 debut album Best New Reissue, and though the individual narratives on Love, Loss & Other Useless Things may cover a lot of ground, there is clear connective tissue between these highly crafted songs which makes every step feel deliberate and considered.

The biggest change on this album though, Roberts admits, is the dynamic of the project itself. When he first moved from the East Midlands to Wales, he was a one-man band with full autonomy over his songwriting. While he still painstakingly lays down the foundations of their work, on the forthcoming new album the process is now given further direction by the rest of the group, something which he explains has become “deeply fulfilling for everyone involved.”

Already earning praise from the likes of God Is In The TV Zine, Yuck Magazine, Circuit Sweet, Let It Happen, Music Blog Wales—and with two sold-out Rough Trade East shows under their belt—this latest evolution of TJ Roberts is likely to bring on board a slew of new supporters once they are given chance to return to clear the cobwebs from the stage.
