Following its first radio play from Lauren Laverne on the BBC 6music breakfast show, Knomad Spock is delighted to announce the release of his sumptuous new single ‘Egypt’ which is out now, giving the second taste of his sublime and ambitious forthcoming debut album scheduled for release in 2021.
B-side ‘Papillon’ was released late last year and caused a last minute shake up of Adam Walton’s Best of 2020 list over at BBC Wales, with both tracks now available together on all good DSPs.

Commenting on the single, KS says: “Egypt is a rework of an earlier song recorded at the Warren with Stew (Baxter, LIFE) almost a decade ago. The riff that plays throughout links both songs, but the vocal harmony, lyrics and arrangement have been brewing in the years since. The burst into free jazz belongs to producer Jamie Smith’s vision, and this track is a classic example of our creative partnership and the dynamics we both bring. The song is an elemental response to depression in both lyrical and musical dimensions.”
“In these very brief and succinct lyrics is also an extended metaphor for the creative process that produced this album, which was always concerned with the means—the end was the unconscious gift.”
The album will be released via Hinterland Creative, a new label formed as part of LIFE drummer Stewart Baxter’s platform for creative projects, collaborations, artistic outlet, music, and design from a handpicked collective of northern artists.
Knomad Spock is an enigmatic mixed-race British-Somali poet, rapper and neofolk singer-songwriter, who explores musical genres as extended analogies for his own multiethnic heritage.
Rooted as deeply in the northern British working class community that raised him, as he is in the Somali nomadic traditions of his inheritance, as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and in true nomadic keeping, he blurs the borders between punk, rap, folk, jazz and the avant garde.
Knomad Spock’s poetry has been published widely in the UK, with his debut collection Portrait of Colossus forthcoming in 2021 with groundbreaking British poetry publishers Flipped Eye Press, with his 2017 hip-hop EP, Preludes, released on renowned UK label SFDB Records followed by remixes with Chester P (Athens in Mordor, 2020).
Following such a fruitful partnership, Spock and producer Jamie Smith are currently already planning the sessions for the follow up record.
Further details of the debut album TBC over the coming months.
